Course Overview
Empowering social care professionals to prevent avoidable health crises in older people.
This hands-on, practical course is designed for social care professionals working with older adults. It focuses on prevention, early recognition, and recovery from the most common reasons older people attend urgent and emergency care — including falls, delirium, infection, immobility, safeguarding concerns, and medication-related issues.
Using real-world scenarios, group discussion, and applied learning, participants will build practical knowledge and confidence to make every contact count.

By the end of the course, participants will have the knowledge, tools, and confidence to apply health-promotion techniques that reduce avoidable health crises and improve quality of life for the people they support.
By the end of the course, participants will:
Understand current UK policy and best practice in health promotion related to urgent and acute conditions, including health literacy.
Identify risks and implement strategies to reduce falls and promote safe mobility, including basic observations.
Understand the basics of cognitive function and delirium, and apply simple screening and prevention principles.
Recognise early signs of infection and use motivational interviewing techniques to support recovery and behaviour change.
Understand the impact of nutrition, hydration, and medication on health, and use practical conversation skills to optimise intake and adherence.
Recognise how pain, mental health, learning disability, and autism influence wellbeing, applying cognitive behavioural techniques (CBT-informed) to support better outcomes.
Train the Trainer Module
A Train the Trainer module and resources are included to support learners to share their learning with colleagues and teams for a more sustainable approach to health and social care, and workforce development.
